Information Technology Student Advisory Board (ITSAB)
Board Charge September 2007

Purpose:

The Information Technology Student Advisory Board (ITSAB) of the University of Arizona provides advice and guidance to central computing services, the library, student government groups, and computing services located in colleges and individual units.  ITSAB advises on issues related to computing and other digital resources as they affect students’ use of these technologies for learning and for their academic lives.

Note: The Board will work to achieve and maintain this structure by recruiting from a variety of students across campus.

When recruiting for Board members, attention should be paid to recruiting a balance of representatives from the following populations:

  • Students living on-campus
  • Students living off-campus (commuter students)
  • Students who participate in Greek Life
  • International students
  • Other groups as the need arises, or as requested

 

Term Lengths:

Full board members (graduate and undergraduate) serve a one-year renewable term.

  • The Associated Students of the University of Arizona representative is appointed by the ASUA leadership.
  • The Graduate & Professional Student Council representative is appointed by the GPSC leadership.
  • ASUA and GPSC representatives are responsible for serving as liaisons to their organizations and serve as two-way conduits of information between their organizations and ITSAB.

 

Ex-officio members serve up to a three-year renewable term.

  • Central Computing, Student Computing, Library, Residence Life, DITC, and RHA representatives are appointed by their Directors or Chairs.
  • Faculty ex-officio members are recruited from the general faculty upon recommendation of current Board members and the Administrative Sponsor.

 

Officers:

The officers of the Board shall consist of the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Webmaster.

  • The Chair is responsible for scheduling, convening, and conducting the meetings. The Chair serves as the primary liaison with university administration.
  • The Vice-Chair assists the Chair in conducting Board Activities and serves as the Chair in case of the Chair’s absence.
  • The Secretary is responsible for recording attendance, key issues, and concerns that are discussed during Board meetings, and for disseminating a record of the meeting to all Board members.
  • The Webmaster is responsible for maintaining the ITSAB website, including posting agendas, minutes, dates and times of future meetings, and other relevant information to be available to the general public.

 

Board officers are elected on an annual basis.

Administrative Sponsor:

The Director of the Office of Student Computing Resources shall serve as the administrative sponsor and will advocate for the Board to the University's administration.

Meetings:

The committee will meet face-to-face on a regular basis throughout the academic year.

The Chair may call emergency meetings as he/she sees fit with 24 hours notice to the rest of the Board.

The committee will follow open meeting laws of the State of Arizona.

Associated Students and Graduate & Professional Student Council representatives may send another member of their respective organization on their behalf as a proxy vote.

In the event that a designated representative fails to attend two consecutive meetings in person, that representative will be considered for removal from the Board.  If the representative is removed, the leadership of the representative's organization will be asked to appoint a new representative immediately.

In the event that an elected member fails to attend two consecutive meetings, that member will be considered for removal from the Board.

Quorum:

A quorum of the Board shall consist of eight (8) voting members.

Resources:

The Office of Student Computing Resources and the Dean's Information Technology Council will work with the Board to provide support services as needed. Examples include but are not limited to: web space, survey design and dissemination, etc.

Budget:

Financial support will be provided by the Office of Student Computing Resources on an annual basis.

Functions:

  1. Research topics of interest to students, related to using information technology to support their academic experience. This includes not only in-class experience, but also using technology in all aspects of their student life.
  2. Research topics at the request of the Central Computing, Student Computing, DITC, Residence Life, Library, Residence Hall Association, Student Government representatives, and other campus units, at the Board's discretion and as time permits.
  3. Provide recommendations on technology-related projects, initiatives and activities that affect the student body.
  4. Assist in advocating to the student body on issues related to using technology to enhance their learning.
  5. Assist in educating the student community about technology resources, projects and initiatives, as well as associated policies.
  6. Assist the University in assessing student technology needs through the implementation of both formal and informal feedback mechanisms.
  7. In an advisory capacity, evaluate major technology projects and initiatives that may have a direct impact on the academic and research endeavors of the student community.
